Powder and Bulk Solids Contain

Containment Systems

What is a containment system?

In powder and bulk solids, a containment system is used to enclose a product/material in a defined space. The containment system keeps both the environment and the operator protected while preventing cross-contamination. Containment equipment, such as an isolator or a glovebox, is found in many industries where precision and accuracy is demanded such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

What is an isolator? What is an example of an isolator?

Isolators are a type of material handling equipment that is designed to separate and protect the user from potentially harmful and/or hazardous materials. Conversely, isolators can also be used to protect the product from exposure to the elements – humidity, static charge, extreme temperature, etc. One type of isolator is a glovebox.

    • What is a glovebox? A glovebox is an enclosure that effectively isolates the interior process environment from the outside or ambient environment to protect the operator outside the glovebox and/or processes inside the glovebox.

What is a downflow booth?

A downflow booth uses high velocity air to capture airborne, generally hazardous, particles as they are released during the production process. Because the air and the particles are being pushed downward, the airborne particles are being released away from the operator.

What is a clean room? What types of clean rooms exist?

Basically, a clean room automates the cleaning of  production equipment and assures/validates repeatability of results that is not obtainable through manual washing.  Clean rooms can be designed as simple or complex as needed for your industry. For some industries, like pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and chemicals, clean rooms are a vital component of safety and sterilization. Clean rooms can be made to artificially-control environments by limiting the presence of sub-micron particles such as dust, airborne microbes, aerosol, chemical vapors and many other components present in the air and modifies the environment as per the operators need. (SOURCE) Cleanrooms are necessary to contain harmful airborne contaminants and isolate materials from areas where contamination is possible.
