What are the most common type of conveying systems?

There are two types of conveying systems seen most often in bulk powder and solid materials handling: pneumatic conveying systems and mechanical conveying systems. The main difference between these systems come down to design. Pneumatic systems use a gas stream or vacuum to transport materials while mechanical systems use belts, rollers, and motors.

Pneumatic conveying is the process of transferring dry bulk materials through an enclosed pipeline using a suspended gas stream. A pneumatic conveyor can be suitable for a range of process industries including food & beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, and paper.

Specifically, pneumatic conveying breaks down into two main categories: dilute (or lean) phase and dense phase. Lean phase conveying is the most common method for transporting powders or granules at a higher speed and lower product-to-air ratio. Dense phase conveying uses a lower speed and higher product-to-air ratio for highly abrasive or fragile materials.
